Fishlips Bar & Grill

Posted by The Scoop On July - 31 - 2008

The name Fishlips kept me at bay for a while, but after a lunch invitation I couldn’t refuse.  Fishlips has the typical bar atmosphere, but for lunch it looks like any regular restaurant. I was surprised to see a lunch bunch clientele.  But after the Angus Young Hamburger, I can see why people stop by for lunch. The Burger was juicy, and full of flavor. Fishlips is a Rocking Joint on Friday and Saturday Nights, where they usually have a live band.  For more info check out their calendar.  Fishlips Bar & Grill is located at 1518 18th St.

Wool Growers Restaurant

Posted by The Scoop On July - 27 - 2008

The first restaurant I ever tried in Bakersfield was Wool Growers. Before I moved here I researched everything Bakersfield, and of course found out a lot about the Basque Community. So, on our first sightseeing visit the office took us to Wool Growers. It was a big thing and the place to be for a Bakersfield lunch. Thankfully the office knew someone, who know someone, so we didn’t have to wait too long to be seated. Everyone at the table, all seven folks were so eager to share the Basque experience with us. The stream of food was unbelievable. I had lamb, which was great! The food was very fresh and hearty. It was like a good home cooked meal. Wool Growers is a family owned must eat Bakersfield landmark. Wool Growers is located at 620 East Nineteenth Street.

Elaine’s Café & Market

Posted by The Scoop On July - 24 - 2008

Elaine’s Café & Market specialize in Vegetarian & Vegan foods. This cute Bistro Café has some tasty original recipes. So tasty you almost forget you’re eating healthy. I had the Mediterranean wrap, with hummus, romaine lettuce, sun dried tomatoes and tzatziki; with vegan cheetos and their homemade Vegan ice cream. I tried the Vegan ice cream in vanilla, chocolate and peppermint. The peppermint ice cream was my favorite because of the peppermint flakes that made the ice cream even more refreshing. Elaine’s also has a salad bar, fresh fruits & vegetables, and other vegetarian and vegan sundries. Elaine’s Café & Market is located at 1717 20th St.

Cost Plus World Market

Posted by The Scoop On July - 23 - 2008

I love cruising the aisles of World Market. There you can experience nicknacks from around the World. I always enjoy learning something new during my shopping experience. And I appreciate the sounds of world music beating down the aisles. They have something for every room in your house. My husband loves the Ginger Beer, and I’ve been experimenting with the Tandoori marinade. I also buy my wonderful Geranium Meyer’s Cleaning Products there. World Market is located at 9240 Rosedale Hwy.

Big Popy’s Deli

Posted by The Scoop On July - 22 - 2008

Big Popy’s Deli mixes the old with the new. This Deli has memorabilia from WWI, Bottle Sodas that have been around since the 1800’s, Pez and Lemon Drop candy, and a collection of Bakersfield postcards. I wanted to try something different so I ordered the Pickle Tongue Sandwich and had a sample of the Delaware Punch. It sounds repulsive but it was delicious. They have a lot to choose from, cold, hot and vegetarian sandwiches, salads, soups and a refreshing assortment of bottled soda. Big Popy’s Deli is located at 1927 20th St.

Smith’s Bakery

Posted by The Scoop On July - 20 - 2008

Every function I attend always has something from Smith’s Bakery. So I’ve been eating Smith’s cookies and Maple Bars since October. Smith’s is another Bakersfield Favorite, that’s been around since 1945 and today was my first trip to the store. This place was bustling at 3PM with a stream of all kinds of people. When you walk through the door, you feel like not much has changed since it opened. You’re greeted with a smile from the women working behind the counter in Red Smock Aprons, with a white polo underneath. The store’s walls are lined with their many awards and cake decorations. I got the Maple Logs, my favorite and the Happy Face Cookies. Smith’s Bakery is located 2808 Union Ave.

McMurtrey Aquatic Center

Posted by The Scoop On July - 17 - 2008

The McMurtrey Aquatic Center was ringing with laughter, bright colors and Country Music. It’s a Water Wonderland! The kids were having a Blast! I wanted to grab my swimsuit and join the Party. I lost count of all the pools. McMurtrey has a lot of fun classes and activities. One thing that caught my attention was the Friday Night Float-in Movie, cute. This is a great place to cool off this summer. Check out the McMurtrey Aquatic Center Calendar, located at 1325 Q St.

Café Med

Posted by The Scoop On July - 16 - 2008

Café Med is a Traditional Mediterranean Restaurant. At Café Med you can always find something going on whether it’s cooking classes, live music, or wine tasting. I went on a Friday and after 30 minutes of studying the large menu, I ordered the Traditional Mediterranean dish Moussaka, very similar to meat loaf with ground lamb and beef. The music was fabulous! Café Med also has a Gourmet Shoppe where you can buy wines, cheeses, and caviar. Café Med is located at 4801 Stockdale Hwy

California Living Museum

Posted by The Scoop On July - 15 - 2008

California Living Museum (CALM) is a Zoo and Garden that concentrates only on California native plants and animals. CALM is great for hands on education. They have an Amphitheater for events, Cactus walk, campfire and family area. The animals are broken up into sections by species. They have bears, raccoons, a mink, foxes, bobcats, and deer. They have small birds, the regal Bald Eagle, turkey vulture, raven and an intelligent crow that says, “so what”. You have to check out the Albert Robbins Reptile House and read his timeline, very interesting. At CALM they also have Zoo Camps, Birthday Parties, Weddings, and a December Holiday Lights Extravaganza. CALM is located at 10500 Alfred Harrell Hwy.
