Golden West Casino is Bakersfield’s place to play. I have always been curious about checking it out, but never have. This weekend with the coaxing of family visiting we went to the Casino. My cousin researched Bakersfield and when she found out there was a Casino she was thrilled. I had my lucky $20 ready for the slots! We walked in and the place was more packed that I expected for a Sunday Evening. Every table was filled with men playing cards, drinking and having a good time. Aren’t they supposed to be at home watching Sunday Night Football? I guess a good card game trumps football! ☺ We walked around looking for the slots but they didn’t have any machines. They only have Casino card games. We were disappointed about no slots, so we sulked over a drink at the bar. My little secret is, I was glad to find out they have Blackjack & Poker, because I want to learn how to play. Golden West Casino is located at 1001 S. Union Ave.

The Old Time Peddler’s Faire & Harvest Festival is an annual event filled with antiques and whatnots. I love antiques, so I spent hours browsing through all the vendors. It’s amazing what you can find at the Faire. I wonder how and where people find such old and amazing pieces. The antiques that I was most startled by were the old medical tools; which were pretty gross when you think, these tools were once used during surgeries, and God knows what else! ☺ I enjoyed looking and strolling the museum grounds. I bought a two-disc collection of African American Entertainers, with artists dating back to 1920s. For more information about this annual event contact the Kern County Museum.

This was the 10th annual Via Arte Italian Street Painting Festival. I was unenthused about going, but I finally dragged out Sunday around 5PM. I didn’t know what to expect but I didn’t expect such grand art with colored chalk in a parking lot. I was very impressed and inspired by what I saw. The Via Arte Festival is an annual event located at The Marketplace. For more information contact the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

Every year annual and new attendees can’t wait for the Kern County Fair. The Kern County Fair is the epitome of Family Fun. As a kid I couldn’t wait for our Houston County Fair, so I know all about the anticipation. I always wanted to be in 4-H just to show a calf at the Fair. So at the Kern County Fair, I spent most of my time looking at the animals and longing for another chance to raise something to show. ☺ I always go to the fair on an empty stomach because I like to try everything; fair food is the BEST! The Kern County Fair is every September. For more information check out the Kern County Fair website.

The Greek Festival is an annual cultural event that attracts a great deal of feasters. Last year I disappointedly missed the food because of my lateness. But this year I was there early enough to get some good eats, baklava and gyro, and enjoy the festivities. After I ate, I walked around, looked at some crafts, and watched everyone enjoy the music. The Greek Festival is always in September and it is a two-day celebration, Friday and Saturday. For the dates of next year’s Greek Festival check out the St. George Greek Orthodox Church’s Calendar.

The name Fishlips kept me at bay for a while, but after a lunch invitation I couldn’t refuse. Fishlips has the typical bar atmosphere, but for lunch it looks like any regular restaurant. I was surprised to see a lunch bunch clientele. But after the Angus Young Hamburger, I can see why people stop by for lunch. The Burger was juicy, and full of flavor. Fishlips is a Rocking Joint on Friday and Saturday Nights, where they usually have a live band. For more info check out their calendar. Fishlips Bar & Grill is located at 1518 18th St.

The Waterfalls disappeared for the night, turning into a dance floor filled with all ages. Thee Majestics from East Bakersfield rounded the evening with Latin, Country, Oldies and R&B sounds. I kept looking at the stage thinking, there must be more than one group playing. I’ve never heard a group cover so many genres of music. No one could say, “They didn’t play anything I liked”. They were amazing! Their sounds definitely “walk the streets of Bakersfield”. The Marketplace Concert by the Fountain takes place Thursdays 7-9PM from June-August.
