Fishlips Bar & Grill

Posted by The Scoop On July - 31 - 2008

The name Fishlips kept me at bay for a while, but after a lunch invitation I couldn’t refuse.  Fishlips has the typical bar atmosphere, but for lunch it looks like any regular restaurant. I was surprised to see a lunch bunch clientele.  But after the Angus Young Hamburger, I can see why people stop by for lunch. The Burger was juicy, and full of flavor. Fishlips is a Rocking Joint on Friday and Saturday Nights, where they usually have a live band.  For more info check out their calendar.  Fishlips Bar & Grill is located at 1518 18th St.

Spotlight Theatre & Café

Posted by The Scoop On July - 21 - 2008

Spotlight Theatre is a Performing Arts Theatre. It’s a very old theatre that has a special nostalgia feel. At Spotlight you can enjoy an evening play, take acting classes, or have soup & salad. They sometimes have special events. I attended their Film Festival. The Café is a local artist hangout. I always enjoy the Jamaican Chicken Salad when available. The Spotlight Theatre & Café is located at 1622 19th St.

Marketplace Concert by the Fountain

Posted by The Scoop On July - 3 - 2008

The Waterfalls disappeared for the night, turning into a dance floor filled with all ages. Thee Majestics from East Bakersfield rounded the evening with Latin, Country, Oldies and R&B sounds. I kept looking at the stage thinking, there must be more than one group playing. I’ve never heard a group cover so many genres of music. No one could say, “They didn’t play anything I liked”. They were amazing!  Their sounds definitely “walk the streets of Bakersfield”. The Marketplace Concert by the Fountain takes place Thursdays 7-9PM from June-August.

Russo’s Bookstore is not only crammed with books, they also have a full calendar of events. This is a great summer spot for the kids. Russo’s offers activities for toddlers to young adults. They have Children’s song and story time, Pokémon trading cards, and Yu-Gi-Oh Tournaments. Russo’s also carries comic books, sports memorabilia, and books by local authors. They even have popular guest authors drop by; that’s where I saw Eric Jerome Dickey. For a full schedule check out their Calendar of Events. Russo’s Bookstore is located at 9000 Ming Avenue # I-4 the Marketplace, East Hills Mall, & 1416 17th St.

Annual Bakersfield Jazz Festival

Posted by The Scoop On June - 5 - 2008

Whoever says Bakersfield has no culture, must have never attended the Annual Bakersfield Jazz Festival. There you could get your culture on with food, wine, and art. The air was infused with smooth sounds, interesting conversations, and a bit of romance. I was very disappointed that I missed Roy Hargrove because I’ve heard so much about his hip-hop influenced sound. But Roberta Gambarini & the Yellowjackets entertained me. I’m not a big Jazz person but Roberta was phenomenal. She was so good that I wanted to stand and say more! Everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves, and so was I. This was the perfect choice for my evening. I was roofed by stars, with wine and cheese and great music. What more did I need on a Friday Night? ☺
