The Guild House

Posted by The Scoop On October - 30 - 2008

The Guild House is the perfect place for a long lunch.  The 1900’s home is amazing and the staff makes you feel right at home.  The inside of the house is as splendid as the outside.  I was so thrilled about finally eating at The Guild House.  The staff was excited about the food and their service was enjoyable.  The menu for the day included Sopa de Calabasas, Viennese Pork, and Bavarian Apple Tart. I haven’t had a 3 course lunch in quite some time, so my palate was ready.  I savored each dish. If food isn’t enough for you, they also mix in a little Fashion.  They had models walk around to each table describing their wardrobe from Christine’s Boutique. I think everyone should have The Guild House experience at least once.  If you haven’t you’re missing out on a range of what Bakersfield has to offer.  The Guild House is located at 1905 18th St, Monday-Friday for lunch. All proceeds are donated to the Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic.

Baja Fresh Mexican Grill

Posted by The Scoop On October - 22 - 2008

I’m not very fond of fast food, but I always feel that I’m eating healthy at Baja Fresh.  Their food is always fresh, and the location I go to is very clean.  Every Thursday, after Women’s fellowship, we congregate at Baja Fresh.  I order either fish or blackened shrimp tacos. Mmmmmm ☺ Baja Fresh is located at 9660 Hageman Rd. #8.

Flame & Skewers Mediterranean Restaurant

Posted by The Scoop On October - 9 - 2008

Flame & Skewers Mediterranean Restaurant is the place to find kabobs, falafels, great salads and many more interesting eats.  At Flame & Skewers you place your order, pay and wait to be called.  It’s a great place to meet friends for lunch. They have a variety of modestly priced dishes. At Flame & Skewers I had the chicken salad and a falafel. I loved the chicken salad but the falafel was disappointing.  Flame & Skewers is located at 1201 24th St.

J’s Place

Posted by The Scoop On October - 6 - 2008

J’s Place is not where you want to be on a Sunday after Church, unless you have plenty of time. ☺ I never get excited about soul food Restaurants, because growing up in Texas, I have a mother, auntie, and grandma, who are the BEST when it comes to soul food cuisine.  But since I don’t get their cooking often, I had to divert to J’s Place. I went to J’s Place Sunday, with most of the after church crowd.  We waited and waited, and finally sat down to order.  I had the fried catfish, sweet potatoes, and cabbage. The catfish was fried crispy and hard, just the way I like.  J’s Place did not disappoint!  The catfish was worth the wait.  I’m looking forward to ordering their Dressing for Thanksgiving.  J’s Place is located at 5141 Ming Ave. They’re closed on Monday.

El Chile Verde

Posted by The Scoop On September - 30 - 2008

This weekend I met a friend at El Chile Verde Restaurant.  I’ve passed El Chile Verde several times, and barely noticed it was there.  My friend wanted to go to El Chile Verde because of their Tacos, so that’s what we ordered.  I had a beef taco with all the trimmings.  The taco was pretty good and the chips were quite tasty.  We ate 3 bowls of the chips and salsa! ☺ El Chile Verde is located at 2681 Calloway Dr.

Que Pasa Mexican Grill

Posted by The Scoop On September - 24 - 2008

Que Pasa is a cute downtown restaurant.  Its décor is colorful, and the Bar seems like the perfect meeting place after work.  I like that you order and pay for your food before you’re seated.  They have a great menu, but they no longer have Tamales.  I had beef nachos with all the trimmings.  Que Pasa is located at 1310 19th St.

The Dream Center & Coffee House is a special place.   The Dream Center helps provide jobs, and transitional assistance to Foster Youth.  It’s a very cute and cozy Coffee House.  At the Dream Center they will have live music, food, and Dagny’s coffee.  I had their Peach Smoothie with whip cream and it was quite energizing. Let’s show our support for the Dream Center!  Dream Center & Coffee House is located

La Costa Mariscos is a quaint Tropical Mexican Restaurant.  It’s colorful décor, hanging beads and seashells make you feel like your seafood comes straight from the fisherman’s boat. I had Tacos de Camaron, and the shrimp were very fresh. They have inside seating and a covered patio. For fine Mexican Seafood check out La Costa Mariscos, located at 716 21st St.

Toro Sushi Bar & Grill

Posted by The Scoop On September - 16 - 2008

Toro Sushi Bar & Grill is a Chic Sushi Spot.  It has a hip LA lounge feel with great food and an electric vibe. It’s a perfect spot to wow a first date, or to wind down on a Friday.  I met some friends at Toro last Friday and we had a spectacular time. This spot was so much more than I expected.  We ordered Diver Scallops, Ahi Tuna, and Grilled Shrimp.  The food was great and the service was even better.  And at 9 the DJ played some jamming lounge music. This is my new hang out!! Toro Sushi is located behind Rite Aid in the Market Place at 9000 Ming Ave. Suite 4-T.

Prime Cut Meats & Eats Restaurant & Bar

Posted by The Scoop On September - 15 - 2008

Prime Cut Meats & Eats, make you think you’re on Bourbon Street.  They have an extensive Cajun menu, with everything from Muffalatta’s to Gumbo. I found the food far from anything I’ve ever had in Louisiana, but they also have a market next door that has all my favorite non-cooked Louisiana foods, Crawfish Tails, Andouille Sausage, Boudin Links, Tony Chachere’s  Creole Seasoning, and even Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane Mix. It’s so good to have a Taste of Louisiana right here in Bakersfield! They also cater, butcher and will deliver.  Prime Cuts is located 9500 Brimhall Rd #100.
