The Greek Festival is an annual cultural event that attracts a great deal of feasters. Last year I disappointedly missed the food because of my lateness. But this year I was there early enough to get some good eats, baklava and gyro, and enjoy the festivities. After I ate, I walked around, looked at some crafts, and watched everyone enjoy the music. The Greek Festival is always in September and it is a two-day celebration, Friday and Saturday. For the dates of next year’s Greek Festival check out the St. George Greek Orthodox Church’s Calendar.

Friday was the Grand Opening of Surface Gallery. If you didn’t already know, I love artistic expression and this gallery’s opening was oozing with expressions of paper. Four artists, Vikki Cruz (co-owner), Liz Sherwyn, Brent Eviston, Yvonne Cavanagh (co-owner), explored paper and it is extraordinary what each artist saw. It’s amazing what one can do with a mundane object. Surface Gallery’s opening attracted countless well- wishers. It was a complete night with live music, food, wine, and art. Surface Gallery is located at 1703 20th St.

Don’t ask me why it’s taken me so long to stop by Dewar’s Candy Shop but today with encouragement from friends I decided to check out one of Bakersfield’s Sweetest Spots. The outside of Dewar’s took me back to this ice cream shop in New York where I used to buy ice cream cakes. The inside was picture perfect, with white and black tile, and pink with green polka dot stools. It seemed like a confection store from a movie. Every detail was amazingly sweet. I love malts, so that’s what I had. And I couldn’t leave without trying their legendary chews. I sampled all the flavors, and was particularly fond of the peppermint and the peanut butter. Dewar’s Candy Shop is located at 1120 Eye St.
