McMurtrey Aquatic Center

Posted by The Scoop On July - 17 - 2008

The McMurtrey Aquatic Center was ringing with laughter, bright colors and Country Music. It’s a Water Wonderland! The kids were having a Blast! I wanted to grab my swimsuit and join the Party. I lost count of all the pools. McMurtrey has a lot of fun classes and activities. One thing that caught my attention was the Friday Night Float-in Movie, cute. This is a great place to cool off this summer. Check out the McMurtrey Aquatic Center Calendar, located at 1325 Q St.

California Living Museum

Posted by The Scoop On July - 15 - 2008

California Living Museum (CALM) is a Zoo and Garden that concentrates only on California native plants and animals. CALM is great for hands on education. They have an Amphitheater for events, Cactus walk, campfire and family area. The animals are broken up into sections by species. They have bears, raccoons, a mink, foxes, bobcats, and deer. They have small birds, the regal Bald Eagle, turkey vulture, raven and an intelligent crow that says, “so what”. You have to check out the Albert Robbins Reptile House and read his timeline, very interesting. At CALM they also have Zoo Camps, Birthday Parties, Weddings, and a December Holiday Lights Extravaganza. CALM is located at 10500 Alfred Harrell Hwy.

Downtown Street Faire 3rd Thursday

Posted by The Scoop On June - 5 - 2008

The fanfare began with fire fighters hoisting the Flag to “I’m Proud to be an American”. As the Flag rippled in the wind, vendors were geared up for business on Chester from 18th to 21st Street. There was rock climbing, beautiful Percheron Drawn Wagon rides, Plinko, Amazing Bounce, Musical Performers and lots of Food.
I learned 3 kinds of peaches; donut, spring snow white, and amber princess yellow, from a local California Certified Farmer who earns his living growing and selling his produce. I’ve always been enamored by farmers, maybe because my dad is a farmer. ☺ You have to respect their hard work and non-traditional lifestyle. The cherries were mouth watering.
I checked out the latest Hybrid cars, Honda Civic 40-45 mi per gallon, and the Prius 53 mi per gallon, these cars aren’t cheap, but what is these days?
There was an amazing Blues/Old School Band (Mississippi Ben) performing. The average age of this group had to be at least 65 and they could Jam. They captivated the crowd, and had us all feeling the soul.
The best part of the evening was sitting down with my friends, in a seedy area in front of port-O-pots eating mini tacos. We couldn’t figure out what type of meat it was but we’ll say it was minced steak seasoned perfectly. Street fairs always have the best food.
