  1. Martie Said,

This is not a funny story but an emotional one for me. I am from Bakersfield but moved to the Dallas area for 11years. We had no family there, just a few close friends that we made there. The 9-11 disaster changed me. I began to miss my family and became overwhelmingly home sick for my parents. While I lived away, I had a young niece, 2 uncles and a grandmother that passed away here in CA. It was so hard to be such a distance away during these events that require so much family support. It got to the point that I could not talk to my mother on the phone because I would burst out crying. So I often avoided contact. Moving was a big decision and my husband thought he would never move back to CA. One day I asked him to simply inquire if his company had any openings in CA. Well from that day to the next his company immediately wanted to transfer him. Indeed they did have an opening for the Southern CA territory that they were having a hard time filling. If felt like God was setting things into place. He commuted to CA from TX for a while, I became pregnant at the age of 40 (very well planned and thought out, we already had a 13yr old) We moved back home to Bakersfield while I was 7 months pregnant. We had to decide whether to move before or after the baby was born. I pushed to get here before the birth. So both our kids were born here in Bako. I miss alot of things about Dallas but nothing compares to being back home close to some wonderful parents. They live 1 mile from my house. I call my mother every day . I hope to always have this kind of close relationship with my kids as I do with my folks. The rest of my family lives nearby too. I feel very blessed to have been able to share my life again with them here in Bakersfield, and boy do they live for the grandkids. And that is my story of how I came to Good Ole Bako!!!!!!!!!! Martie.

  2. Kim Kotrla Said,

We came to Kern County 21 years ago traveling across the country from Texas in a van with 4 small children - ages 1 to 6 - for my husband’s work. It was supposed to be only for three years at the most and then we were going to return home to Dallas where all our family lives. Somehow, three years turned into 21 (and counting). We have a Texas Room in our house (you can take the girl out of Texas, but not Texas out of the girl) and our Christmas decorations include a huge, lit-up state of Texas, but this community has been so incredibly good to us and a wonderful place to raise our kids who now think of California as home. Someday, we will hopefully return to Texas, but for now, we’re here!
